A message from our CEO: Motion’s dedication to continual learning & development

Motion’s CEO Sue Gilpin (pictured centre above with Motion colleagues) shares more about our commitment to the education and development of our care partners in support of making life accessible for our clients, our thanks for our therapist partners during Occupational Therapy Month (October), and a reminder about the importance of equipment that prevents falls in the home as Fall Prevention Month returns (November).

September was the start of a very busy Fall event season at Motion. We were pleased to host a series of 8 Motion Rehab Expo events taking place across Ontario and BC from September through mid-November, which is a continuation of an additional 4 expos held this past Spring in Alberta and Manitoba. Following a long hiatus since the start of the pandemic, the Motion Rehab Expo, as well as a number of local community events, have allowed us to reconnect in person with our clients and the people who play a big role in working to ensure that our clients remain safe, mobile and independent through a wide range of mobility and home accessibility devices.

As part of our vision to make life accessible for everyone, we are committed to not only cultivating our own network of knowledgeable experts at Motion but being a part of the education and development of our care partners so that collectively we are providing the best care to our clients. And the Motion Rehab Expo events are a wonderful opportunity to achieve just that. The Motion Rehab Expo is a full-day education and networking event for our care partners, including therapists, funders, and equipment suppliers. I was happy to join the team – and Motion’s Client Ambassador Beau Hayward – in Toronto on September 22 and loved seeing everyone coming together with a shared purpose of learning and enhancing our ability to provide exceptional care to the clients who are at the centre of our work.

As the expos continue into October, during Occupational Therapy Month, the events will also be an opportunity to give thanks to the occupational therapists who we work with every day for the delivery of life-changing devices. From wheelchairs to walkers and mobility scooters, these are the people who, in conjunction with our team, ‘help solve the problems that interfere with a person’s ability to do the things that are important to them’ (CAOT) by prescribing the right equipment to enhance a person’s mobility. Join us in thanking an OT in your life this October for their partnership in making life accessible.

In addition to increasing mobility and inclusivity for our clients, we also remain focused on creating safe and accessible home environments that foster independence. And this remains top of mind following our celebration of National Seniors Day on October 1 and as Fall Prevention Month returns this November. I’m always surprised to hear that 1 in 3 senior Canadians fall each year and that 40% of long-term care admissions are as the result of a fall – many falls that could have been prevented by adding a grab bar or raised toilet seat in the bathroom, a ramp at the front door or a stairlift on a stairway, or a bed rail or adjustable bed in the bedroom

Like many Canadians with an aging loved one, these are the solutions that I work with my family and friends to explore to keep them safe and in their own homes as long as possible. Stay tuned for more about the Safe at Home by Motion program this upcoming November. But don’t wait to check out our home accessibility products & solutions page to learn more about the products we have to offer to keep your loved ones safe.
