Meet Jeremy, a Mobility & Accessibility Consultant at Motion Saskatoon. After 20 years in the culinary world, Jeremy found that his customer service skills gained in another sector have added immense value to his current role at Motion. Hear more from Jeremy about his experience at Motion below. What was your professional experience before joining Motion? Before joining my current role, I spent 20 years in the culinary world as a chef and restaurant manager. During that time, I had the opportunity to work with every type of cuisine from high-end fine dining to more laid-back, casual eateries. Having honed my skills in both customer service and menu creation, I’ve found that my experience in the restaurant industry has been incredibly valuable in my current position. The strong relationships I built with customers during those years have helped me develop a unique ability to understand and connect with people – a skill that’s served me well in my new role. What drew you to this role? To be honest, my transition into this role was somewhat unexpected. When COVID-19 hit, the hospitality industry took a hard hit, and I found myself needing to make a change. One day, I came across an ad for a transportation driver position at Motion Saskatoon. After gaining valuable experience as a driver, I proved my ambition and dedication, which led me to take on new challenges within the company. Before long, I found myself moving into sales, where I continue to thrive today as a Mobility & Accessibility Consultant. Who would have thought that a global pandemic would lead me down this path? What do you get to do here that you might not be able to do somewhere else? There’s something truly special about feeling like I’m making a real difference in my community. Seeing the smiles, witnessing joyful tears, and experiencing the overall happiness of those I help – it’s the most rewarding aspect of this job by far! Plus, I love that I’ll always have new challenges to tackle and opportunities for growth. It’s a forever-learning position that keeps me engaged, motivated, and fulfilled in ways I never thought possible. What makes Motion a great place to work? When it comes to what makes this company a great place to work, I’d have to say that the people – staff, management, and clientele – are at the top of my list. The camaraderie and support we all share is refreshing. We look out for each other, lift each other up, and genuinely enjoy working together. Add to that the various perks and benefits offered by the company, such as RRSP matching and an impressive benefits program. It’s easy to see why I feel so fortunate to be a part of this team. What is the culture like amongst your team? I really enjoy being part of a team that feels like a tight-knit family. We’re not just coworkers; we have those friendly conversations throughout the day, whether it’s work-related or just catching up on life. There’s a real openness here that I think is becoming a rare thing in the world today. Sure, we don’t always see eye-to-eye, and challenges do pop up (as they tend to do), but at the end of the day, our focus is always on the client. It’s that shared commitment that makes it easy to put aside any differences – we’re all on the same page when it comes to delivering the best for them. What are some examples of how you support each other and your clients? The amount of knowledge and experience we have here is incredible. As a newer Consultant navigating the medical field, having this wealth of information at my fingertips is invaluable. It’s like having a living, breathing encyclopedia right at work! No matter what the client needs, there’s always someone with the right answer or guidance. It makes you feel confident knowing you’re part of a team that has your back, and ultimately, the client’s back as well. What do you love most about your team? What do I love most about my team? Hands down, it’s the sense of humour, especially in the service department. The team is always on the same wavelength as me when it comes to cracking a joke, and it makes even the most stressful days manageable. It’s not just about the work; it’s about having those light moments that remind you we’re all in this together. A good laugh goes a long way in keeping things balanced and making the tough days a little easier. What would you say to someone to encourage them to accept a role on your team? If I were encouraging someone to join our team, I’d ask them: Do you want to work in a field where you know you’re making a real difference? This isn’t just any job — it’s one that offers new challenges every day in an industry that’s always evolving. You’ll have the chance to grow, learn, and be part of something meaningful. Plus, let’s not forget the $1,500 recruitment bonus… It’s a great opportunity to join a team that’s passionate about what we do and have a little fun along the way. What drew you to this role and how has your career grown here? If you’d asked me ten years ago where I’d be today, a sales role in mobility and accessibility probably wouldn’t have even crossed my mind. But once I started down this path, I quickly realized it’s exactly where I’m meant to be. The growth here has been both vast and rapid — some days I go home with my head spinning, but in the best way. I started as a driver, moved into a customer service position, and then found my way into sales at Motion. Now, my focus is on custom seating, and I’m embracing every minute of it. It’s been a wild ride, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. What is unique about the learning opportunities at Motion? At Motion, most of the learning happens right in the field, with a strong focus on delivering quick, effective client care. It’s fast-paced and constantly evolving, with plenty of problem-solving thrown into the mix. For example, anyone who’s worked on a more complex wheelchair knows that adjusting something as simple as a footplate can quickly turn into an overhaul of the entire chair. And that’s what makes it so unique — the opportunities to learn are vast, and no two days are ever the same. Every new scenario teaches you something different, and that keeps you on your toes. What is an example of the impact working at Motion has allowed you to have? As an outside sales representative in a rural province, I spend a lot of time on the road. My hometown is a small place called Swift Current, where mobility devices aren’t readily available. Our branch saw an opportunity to get involved and make a difference in the community, so I started working with clients there to see who I could help. So far, we’ve been able to assist several clients in getting the proper equipment they needed to improve their mobility and quality of life. It’s been incredibly rewarding to bring these resources to a place I know so well and see the direct impact of our work.
