Workshop description

Successful mobility prescriptions require the clinician to critically evaluate a comprehensive client assessment, available funding, and equipment options within the context of the client’s life. At the same time, in the current healthcare environment, you as clinicians have limited time and often limited access to equipment such as a plinth to complete a mat assessment. Using a case-based approach, this workshop will focus on practical approaches to client assessment, equipment prescription and completing “audit proof” funding applications using the assistive devices program as an example. You will have hands-on experience with manual wheelchairs, power mobility devices, and a mat assessment. You will also be educated on ensuring best practices and clinical justification to support funding applications. Through case studies, we will explore the choice between prescribing manual and power mobility.

*Motion is an accredited provider of continuing education and training through the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). Attendees who complete a knowledge check (quiz) and evaluation will receive 0.65 Certified Education Units (CEUs).

What to expect

  • Explore the comprehensive assessment required for a successful mobility prescription.
  • Practice a mat assessment, when there isn’t a mat available, focused on key postures and measurements.
  • Appraise the eligibility for funding using four clinical case studies.
  • Generate an ‘audit proof’ funding application using the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) as an example.
  • Through hands-on experience with equipment, identify key differences between types of manual wheelchairs, focusing on how the clinical assessment findings determine what the clinician would choose.
  • Through hands-on experience with the equipment, identify the key differences between the types of power mobility devices, focusing on what clinical assessment findings would lead the clinician to choose that device.
  • Analyze client scenarios to determine whether a manual or power wheelchair would be the most appropriate prescription.
